5 Office Cleaning Tips to Prepare for Spring

March 14, 2018 By: Colleen Thomascomment

It certainly feels like that Old Man Winter is lingering, extending his unwarm welcome. Like everything else in life, the arrival of spring is going to happen in the blink of an eye, the snap of the fingers. Yes, warm temperatures, green grass, and sunshine will be here shortly. Rejoice.

Do you know what this also means? Spring cleaning!

We tend to connect spring cleaning with our humble abodes, but spring cleaning can also be transferred to our office spaces. After months of slush, snow, and salt, as well as the bacteria emanating from workers’ coughs and sneezes, our workspaces have metastasized into havens for germs and all sorts of disgusting particles.

To get yourself ready for the April to September period, perhaps it is time to perform some cleaning. Even if you hire professionals, you can get the ball rolling right now.

Here are five office cleaning tips to prepare for spring:

1. Declutter Your Office Workspaces

If you think you’re sometimes invisible at the office, then it’s probably because you have been buried in paperwork, potato chip bags, and candy wrappers. If you’re George Costanza or Wally from “Dilbert,” then this would be a good thing. But it isn’t if you’re a model worker, and we know that this is definitely the case.

As you spring clean your office, it is time to declutter. During this process, you need to toss out all those useless papers, chuck out your spaghetti lunch from three months ago, and the soda pop cans you have been hiding from you colleagues.

Once you declutter, you know you have already succeed!

2. A Visible Workstation? Give it a Thorough Clean

Now that you likely have a visible workstation, the next step is to give it a thorough clean.

Grab a bottle of Lysol, a container of Lysol wipes, Windex, paper towels, and even cotton swabs (for the keyboard). As soon as you have all of these products, wipe down the computer, the desk, the chair, and the floor.

Not only will your cubicle or office look immaculate, it will smell divine!

3. Inspect the Refrigerator in the Breakroom

When was the last time you took a peek inside the breakroom refrigerator? Well, we guarantee that there is likely a container of leftover dinners from two months ago. Or, there may be some spoiled milk, a rotten bologna sandwich, and an avocado that looks like an alien egg.

Prior to the arrival of spring, throw out all of this junk and wipe down the entire fridge surface.

4. Invest in Your Ergonomics

A healthy and happy workforce, is a productive workforce. How can you make them healthy and happy? Invest in ergonomics.

In today’s generation of disk jockeys, carpal tunnel syndrome is ubiquitous, backpain is prevalent, and digital eyestrain is impacting our health. A lot of this can be minimized through the power of ergonomics: comfortable chairs, modern desks, and great lighting.

Sure, it will require an investment, but it will pay dividends down the line.

5. Organize Your Virtual Settings

You know, spring cleaning doesn’t only need to be physical. You can undergo a virtual scrub.

How so? Open up your email inbox folders, click on the internal storage, and find out how many applications and programs you have installed. The more you search, the more you will realize that you have accumulated a lot of junk over the last several months.

Let’s be honest: one of the best ways to complement your clean desk is to have a clean computer.

Many offices hire professional cleaners to organize, vacuum, and decontaminate workplaces. This is a wise thing to do, but sometimes there are daily, weekly, and monthly chores that you and your staff should do to ensure that the business is clean every single workday.

Your interior has taken a beating from this horrendous winter. Disinfect, wipe, and spray. You incorporate this triple threat into your to-do list, and you’ll maintain a sublime office.
