Eyelashes. Such a small feature in the grand scheme of things and yet such an integral part of bringing together your look. Not everyone is born with those long, luscious lashes so many people yearn for. Luckily, eyelash extensions are here to save the day and help out those of us who weren’t gifted the lashes of a rock star.
1. What are eyelash extensions?
Eyelash extensions are a set of eyelashes that are added with glue to your natural eyelashes to make them look longer, fuller and thicker.
Think of those glue-on eyelashes you can buy at the pharmacy, except better. These extensions are applied lash-by-lash by a trained professional, and can last up to six to eight weeks depending on your lash growth and how well you care for your extensions.
2. Time commitment
Get ready for a little rest and relaxation! Getting eyelash extensions is tedious for your lash technician, and it’s a little time consuming. A full set of lashes can take up to two hours. You’ll be laying on your back with your eyes closed for the entire session.
As with any service, you may or may not end up chatting with your lash tech, but you won’t be able to move, check your phone or do anything else during that time. In fact, lots of people actually end up falling asleep while getting their eyelashes done!
3. Where to go
Anywhere you turn today you can find someone doing eyelash extensions. Tons of beauty parlours and salons have added eyelash extensions to their repertoires, and you may find that some of your family, friends, and acquaintances are offering this service out of their home.
Just make sure that wherever and whoever you go to for your eyelash extensions is certified and has a clean working environment. Don’t mess around with your eyes – an infection or irritation caused by improperly applied eyelashes and unclean supplies could cause more problems than it’s worth.
4. Price commitment
It really depends on whether you’re hitting up the fanciest spa on the block or your best friend’s basement salon. Prices can range from $45 to $220 depending on your location, who you go to, and the type of lash extension you decide to get.
Beware of cheap lashes. You don’t have to completely rule them out, just understand and keep in mind that you are paying for the time it takes to do them and the products they are using. Cheaper lashes may mean that person or salon is cutting corners or using cheaper quality products.
5. Taking care of your new lashes
While you may get the royal treatment in the chair while you’re getting your lashes done, you need to give them the royal treatment once you leave to ensure that they last as long as possible.
Some of the rules you have to be sure to follow are:
- Not to get your lashes wet for at least 24 hours after application. This means avoiding steam, water, or sweating too much.
- Not rubbing your eyes too much or too hard. This will pull them right off!
- Washing your lashes daily with oil free cleanser.
- Trying to sleep on your back to avoid crushing your lashes into weird directions which could weaken the bond.
6. Do your homework
These are just a few of the many things you can and should do take care of your lashes, so keep in mind that there is a little work to be done on your part after you leave the salon.
If you’re willing to treat your lashes right and do proper upkeep, they will last longer and be more worth your time and money.
