According to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), more than 17 million cosmetic procedures were done in the U.S. in 2016. Plastic surgery is constantly improving and the procedures are constantly becoming less invasive, less expensive, and have shorter recovery times. Although plastic surgery is most popular in the middle-aged demographic, it is actually popular across all demographics.
While cosmetic surgery has become more popular and keeps on improving dramatically, these are still serious surgical procedures and getting them done is not as simple as showing up at your local plastic surgeon’s office. Each procedure is different and has its own set of rule that must be followed to ensure success and safety. It is very important to learn as much as possible before even stepping into a surgeon’s office.
1. Breast Augmentation
The most popular cosmetic procedure for women. In this procedure, the surgeon inserts silicone, saline, or another alternative under the chest muscles or breast tissue. The implants typically last somewhere between 7 to 12 years. If the surgeon uses dissolvable sutures, then the sutures will typically disappear in 6 weeks.
However, if dissolvable suture were not utilized, a follow up appointment will be required to have them removed. Strenuous activities are not recommended for up to 6 weeks following the procedure.
Liposuction removes fat cells from a client’s desired area of the body. There are two ways to obtain this result. The first way is where, after an incision is made, a tube is placed in the area and the fat is removed from the body. Alternatively, a less invasive option is “Coolsculpting,” a non-invasive procedure where the fat cells are frozen and then permanently removed by the body. Recovery time for a liposuction procedure typically lasts several weeks but it can be just a few days if the non-invasive option is used.
Rhinoplaty is a procedure that reconstructs, reshapes, and/or restores nose function. It can used to correct an injury, reshape the nose into a more aesthetic shape by removing any bumps, narrowing the nasal openings, or correcting a deviated septum. There are two main types of rhinoplasty, open and closed.
Open rhinoplasty means that the incision(s) will be made on the outside of the nose to give surgery the necessary access to make alterations. In a closed rhinoplasty those incisions are instead made only on the inside of the nose. Healing typically takes about 2 weeks following the procedure but the nose’s tissue can continue to settle and change for up to a year after the surgery.
4. Eyelid Surgery
Eyelid surgery or blepharoplasty is a surgery where, after a small incision is made, extra skin is removed from the eyelids, which can drastically alter a person’s appearance and stop them from appearing tired or old. It can also be used to reduce the appearance of crow’s feet around the eyes.
The procedure takes 2-3 hours to complete and it takes about a week to recover. However, the procedure will not fix the overall look of the face like dark eye circles or sunken cheeks. To fix those problem, a face lift might be required.
5. Face Lift
A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, is a surgical procedure that removes excess facial skin and can also tighten the entire face. The initial recovery following a facelift is about 2 weeks. However, like a rhinoplasty, the facial tissue will continue to change and reduce in swelling for up to a year.
6. Gynecomastia Surgery
Gynecomastia, the enlargement of male breast tissue, can be treated with tissue removal and liposuction. After the procedure, most men feel well enough to return to work after a few days. The tissue might still be sore or lack sensitivity for a few week or a up to a few months following the procedure.
While men tend to utilize plastic surgery procedures at significantly lower rates, there are still over a million men who get plastic surgery procedures done every year. Out of the top 5 procedures, liposuction, breast augmentation, rhinoplasty, eyelid surgery, and face lifts, only one of those procedures is a procedure done mostly on female clients, breast augmentation. For men, instead of breast augmentation, a popular top five procedure is breast reduction or gynecomastia.
It is important to consider and learn as much as possible about your options as well as your potential procedure when considering plastic surgery. Another important consideration is to make sure that you pick a board-certified surgeon.
