Moving house is often cited as one of the most stressful times in someone’s life. There are many ways that you can go about organizing the packing and moving of your possessions, however, there are some very important things that you should bear in mind. There are tried and tested methods of making the process of moving house as easy and stress-free as possible. Here are just a few to consider.
1. Start planning early
If you leave everything to the last minute, you’re going to make it seem like you have an impossible task ahead of you. If you can make a list of things that need to be done well in advance of the move you can prioritize and get as many things as possible out of the way as soon as you can. It is best to start this process anywhere between 4 to 8 weeks before the move, just remember to stay positive and keep smiling.
2. Be ruthless with your possessions
When you are packing your things, make sure that you are not packing things that you never use or don’t want. There is no use something taking up space on a truck, then move it across town for it to only sit at the back of a closet until you move again. You need to be honest with yourself and if you’re never going to wear an item of clothing or use an item again then donate or throw it in the trash.
3. Get the packing materials in advance
There is no need to wait on getting the packing materials, these can be bought well in advance of the move. In fact, this could even save you money as you could purchase these online. You should also make sure that you have enough, you don’t want to run out halfway through packing your things.
4. Hire a team of professional movers
You may think that you can manage the whole move yourself, but when it comes down to the big day and you need to get three beds and a couch down the stairs you might start to regret your decision. Professional movers know exactly what they’re doing and will move with impressive efficiency to ensure that you are out of your old house on time. They are also very skilled at packing a truck the right way so that nothing becomes damaged or lost in the move. You can also have your movers to help pack any or all of your items. This may be well worth it if you are under a tight timeframe.
5. Get the right van for the job
If you hire a team of professional movers then this won’t be an issue. You will be able to sit back and watch them take all of your things from a to b. If you are doing the move yourself then you will need to worry about how far you are moving and how large of a truck you need to rent. The last thing that you want is to find that you have rented a truck that is too small and you need to make an additional trip.
6. Pack everything that you’ll need for the first night separately
The first night in your new home will be exciting, however, after a full day of moving that last thing that you want to do is have to open every box looking for your toothbrush! By packing a back with a few essentials and maybe a few changes of clothes you will then be able to unpack at your leisure.
